Importance of Personal Development

Abraham Maslow developed the Hierarchy of Needs model in 1940-50s USA, and the Hierarchy of Needs theory remains valid today for understanding personal development.

At the top of Maslow's diagram is Self-Actualization, which is defined as realizing personal potential, self-fulfillment, seeking personal growth and peak experiences.

Some of Maslow's Self-Actualizing Characteristics are...
  • keen sense of reality
  • see problems in terms of challenges and situations requiring solutions
  • need for privacy and comfortable being alone
  • reliant on own experiences and judgment; independent
  • socially compassionate
  • accepting others as they are
  • spontaneous and natural
  • excited and interested in everything, even ordinary things
  • non-discriminating
  • seek peak experiences that leave a lasting impression
